SEF ALBERTZ’S PIANO CONCERTO | Work insights
At the end of the second movement, the ‘child motif’ appears again in the descant, this time
accompanied in a special way by the strings: they create an acoustic texture (a kind of sanding
sound) by rubbing their hands together in a circle. In a live performance, this creates an interesting
visual and thus, in a way, choreographic effect.
The thematic (called here ‘rhythmical’) idea of the 3rd movement already appears previously in
the first and second movements but in a split manner, quasi halved (1st movement m. 243-244;
2nd movement m. 269-271). This is another symbolic element to ‘call’ or announce the 3rd
movement of the concerto:
(III Mov. - thematic idea)
(I Mov. - mm. 243-45) (II Mov. - mm. 179-71)
