The idea of using percussive elements, as in the first movement, is also taken up again. This time
the pianist taps rhythmic patterns on the body of the instrument:
At the end of the 3rd movement, the quotation of the famous German folk melody “Die
Gedanken sind frei” (Thoughts Are Free) appears, rhythmically varied like a joropo. This also
expresses the composer's own artistic credo:
Ich denke, was ich will I think what I want,
und was mich beglücket... and what delights me...
